School Discipline (Article Topic on www.helium.com)

Never knew the end of a belt until aged 7; I got belted on the hands by the Head Nun at Boarding school - for not remembering the quoted passage from the Bible.

I remember holding out my hands in front of the class whilst the Head teacher came down full force with the vigour of a captain wishing to instill ‘workmanship’ discipline into my very being.

Learning ‘word for word’ passages from the bible to then recite in front of the class wasn’t something I took to naturally. Aged 7, the adrenalin certainly got the better of me and my mind went completely blank - as a blank slate. Tried as I could, I daren’t say out loud, ‘I did do my homework, I did learn the passage I had to learn’ but the words couldn’t come out. They got stuck in my throat.

No, but I felt the pain of that belted tremor and I remember my nose running and felt awkward tears rolling down my cheeks, as I silenced my mouth into not admitting that I did learn that passage; I did do my homework:

I daren’t cry out loud. The pain was awful. I didn’t think it was fair.

NB. In all fairness, the Head Nun was fair in many ways - but as the Bible was her forte, it meant a lot to her that we treated it with the respect and reverence it thoroughly deserved.  Hence her stance on the matter at that moment.

Life Drawings of a Nude Model - Part of my Sketches Collection (2004)

Life Drawings of a Nude Model
Part of my Sketches Collection (2004)

Drawing a nude model can be challenging but having studied Leonardo da Vinci’s nude sketches as part of my History of Art course, the natural form wasn’t and isn’t quite so daunting to tackle.

The sketch above was of a nude model in an art class I took in 2004 to update my knowledge of the various art medium and styles by a trained artist whose expertise was next to none.

At the local craft market

I exhibited my artwork, books and booklets at my local craft market today and got to know about some very useful resources to promote and sell my artwork.

My spot was next to a singer/songwriter who painted as a hobby and use www.theartsource.org
to exhibit his paintings - and he seems to be doing fine. One small biz gentleman suggested I do big canvasses and carried along the lines of my most three current paintings of nature and animals - which I said I’d do once I’ve done about 100 watercolours.

Visit my artwork and ‘jewellery by artisans’ website at: http://www.innovativecabin.com/

A few others came by to discuss my works and just to say hi which showed good cameraderieship and interest.

Craft markets are such a good place to exhibit artwork (I couldn’t sell any jewellery there as two sellers were already selling Peruvian jewellery). However, having an outlet for my artwork and writings is a bonus and a good way of publicising both - it helps to have very helpful like-minded ‘neighbours’ too.

Worldliness and pleasurable wordiness

Worldliness and pleasurable wordiness

(Poetry does to our hearts and souls what Guinness does to the body - a known factor for me since 6 yrs old, being given guinness and eggnog, as a tonic by my mutter)

I look endlessly on
realms of words
to be regurgitated or not
as the case may be, to be seen
and heard

as the case is
and was all along meant to be
and staging this
cordially and accordingly
in compliance with my voice
of wordiness and headiness
in that the words heady and portent
reach ready ears
giving pleasureable something
to those
in circles warm and friendly
naturally
fraternising, sharing
the togetherness
of joining in and sharing
the
complimentary factor
of drinking to our liking to hear
the wordiness of speaking
and goodness

Oh my word.

Cheers.

It Really is Hot Here by Coll B. Lue

It Really is Hot Here

Many a times many
Perspire is as perspire can be
dripping as can dripping be

Falling when the heat rises
above bearable
No air conditioner can
cool

Or the blood pressure soars
above temperatures
acceptable
as the heat soars

And mercury rises
into bubbling streams
when the male skunk
gets its tail in the air

=======================

Performing in front of a packed audience, Luke Wright’s live rendition of his poems was superb, especially:

It’s Mimms O Clock;
One Night of Spending
and Dudley Livingstone

The audience were enthusiastic and lively, never missing a joke or funny story and their participation well received and appreciated by Luke.

The show started 10 minutes later than scheduled, on Luke’s request to the Box Office clerk (I was sitting nearby watching Venus or Serena Williams playing tennis at Wimbledon, wearing what seemed to me jodhpurs or ‘daddy long pants’ - I thought the latest tennis gear motto was to wear the least possible to get ‘the best all round speed velocity across the body surface’ when playing?! Ho hum.

This 10-minute delay was to accommodate members of the audience on their way from work to the venue as he’d mention to the box office clerk, there was a delay in the transport. True enough, the theatre was packed soon there enough and the show got off to a good start with everyone in a good mood.

He mentioned Pepe the Skunk in reference to a character in one of his poems, which made me chuckle, as I’d also made reference to Pepe in one of my poems (which’ll be my next weblog post) and I’d commented previously on that same poem I’d posted on Myspace, saying, imagine being in an office of females on a hot and humid day without any air conditioning in place.

It was an incredible night and special as the recording was to be made into a Live CD record. An interesting and enjoyable night had by all.

He’s just a brilliant performer and poet and given an opportunity you should make a point of seeing him perform his poetry live on stage.

Chris Parks & Graham Milton’s Art Exhibit

A Gallery’s show ‘Fire Skies and Electric Seas’ tonight (Thurs, 28 June) featured the works of Chris Parks and Graham Milton, two top UK artists, of which Circumvent 1 by Chris Parks caught my attention

Chris Parks:
His abstract paintings are ethereal in effect and vividly conveyed;
His unique vision is fluid and his paintings capture light and movement dynamically
His work is ‘unparalleled in its fluidity, movement and subtlety.’ (As quoted by A Gallery )

Graham Milton:
His landscapes are inspired by memories of skyscapes;
His interpretation of the relationship between the sun and earth show an interesting combination ;
The majority of his landscapes focus on the start and the end of the day

According to A Gallery, Milton says:
‘there is something quite humbling and inspiring about the vast natural beauty of the sky at sunrise and sunset’

I agree with A Gallery that there is a Turner influence in his landscape paintings. A Gallery also mentions the influences of the abstract expressionism of Rothko, adding,
Milton, ‘uses the techniques of the Old Masters - underpainting and layering of colour glazes’.

Precisely so, though I don’t recall seeing any of Rothko’s works but certainly abstract expressionism features heavily in the Milton paintings I saw tonight.

====================

The exhibition of the works by the two artists mentioned was extraordinary in the layout of the artwork, the arrangements of the work and the juxtaposition of each painting to demonstrate the quality of each to its best effect. Another contemporary painting caught my attention:-

Autumn Nude by Valeryia Steadman, Acrylic on canvas, in the warm colours and figure of a nude girl lying on a bed by a wall heater with the subtle hint of laced see-through underwear framing the body contours exquisitely.

The exhibition showed a good selection of sculptures and paintings by other up and coming artists in contemporary art.

Food for thought

My lunchtime is spent in cafes and restaurants which I know are near-perfect clean - if the toilet isn’t clean or smelling of bleach or the freshness of toilet cleansing solutions, I’m outta there, in nano-seconds, cos, to my mind, the hygience ain’t top of their priorities and for me that’s a must or a no-no.

Why?

I went into a pub (a public house) around 3 years ago on one of the most well known roads in London and found myself ill after having a plate of chips. The reason: one customer who I’d seen there a couple of times at lunchtime, came with his dear companion, a ‘lil pit bull terrier or an hybrid of that ilk and I’d befriended this ‘lil dog - well - the instincts got the better of me and I patted it’s head and kept whistling for it to come over - then I’d wink at it and tapped my legs for it to come over and stay by the table.

A couple of days later, I felt ill and went to the hospital, complaining of an headache. It turned out, I needed a 3-month supply of de-worming tablets (OMG)! I nearly blacked out! I was that close to fainting - imagine being in Miami in September, even, outside for 3 minutes, in unbreathable heat with mosquitos sucking the blood in your legs, arms and cheeks (yes that unbearable). Apparently, if not treated, it could seriously cause dizziness and nausea and even worse, lead to the person being ill for a long while.

The nurse didn’t fail to mention either, that schools are the worst place for this, as children lodge the bacteria unintentionally on door handles having eaten food dropped on the floor without realising the importance of hygiene nor the importance of washing their hands after going to the toilet.

Needless to say, I didn’t feel too good for a while.

The Mole in Home Territory by Coll B. Lue

The Mole in Home Territory by Coll B. Lue

The Mole in Home Territory

From that cubby hole he got cushiony comforts
wooden flooring didn’t come smooth
nor the openness of others

In his mind he figured out his place
not a carpenter in sight just him
and his natural tools

He liked his spot where he saw
everything and surmised at nothing
he knew his position and his home truths

He didn’t have to sit to ponder over
anything much, except his next meal
small but plentiful for him to last until noon

He watched and waited
standing in the daylight mixing
pleasure and work until he sighted a biggun

It is I, aye Capitaine by Coll B. Lue

It is I, aye Capitaine

I am the way my thought
follows into the side of
many traits
Mine be the eye that
sees the thinking
tracks of many
treasurable captions

I, eye, capitaine
I am here to be
seen drifting across
the ocean of seeing
waves, floating
across the islands of
my memories

drifting

slowly
into the distance
